The Self-Tanner Search

I am a very pastey pale girl.

This means that I don't tan when in the sun AND, if I do ever get some color on my own, I am usually red as a lobster.  Every year I am faced with this dilemna and every year I am on the hunt for the perfect self-tanner to give me the golden glow I can never achieve myself.

I went shopping with a girlfriend on Friday and our sole purpose was to find the best bottled self-tanner that's not too expensive.  (Actually, that's not true.  Our sole purpose was to go to the gym but we decided to shop instead of working out.....a much better option I think.)  We immediately went to Sephora and looked at everything from Clinique's Self Sun Body Airbrush Spray to Too Faced Tanning Bed in a Tube and even, my personal fave, Dior's Self-Tanner Shimmering Glow but all were way out of the budget I'd allotted.

I almost left Sephora, feeling very defeated, until I saw a little flashy golden tube out of the corner of my eye.  I picked it up, read the label (Sephora Collection Tinted Self-Tanning Body Mist) and noticed that it was only $17.  SCORE!!!  I ran home and tried it immediately.

This is a great product because it's a spray.  This makes a world of difference as you can hold the container at every angle and spray till your heart's content.  A huge bonus is that it doesn't streak!  You don't even need to rub the product into your skin because it comes out more like a dry oil.  However, I was rubbing it into my skin, just in case.  I will also say that after about three hours, I looked like I had been at the beach all day and really did have a nice all-over glow.  THE BEST part of this product, though, is that it doesn't have a smell.  Do you realize how gross some self-tanners can be?  This one has no foul scent and actually does the trick, without turning me orange.  I'd say it is definitely worth the $17.

In the next couple weeks, I'm also going to be trying the Victoria's Secret products as I've heard so much about them and can't wait to do a comparison.

What's your favorite self-tanner?

Ang, I was totally going to post a picture of myself, but I quickly wrote this post while on a break at work. I will post a picture of myself later today for sure.

  5. I should definitely try this one out! Besides the Laura Geller powder that I use, I don't really have any self tanners that I like. How long does this one last, by the way?

  7. Being a pale girl myself, I've become a self-tanning expert. Thankfully, though, I am able to tan so I usually end up doing that instead... But I did a 3-part self-tanning series on my blog a while back.. You might want to check it out!

  8. Questions: how long does it last? And, does it run off when you sweat? I use the Bare Escentuals kind if I manage to use it at all, and while it works relatively well, it totally runs off and streaks if I get sweaty. I used to run a lot (not so much any more...lazy sack here), and it totally ran down my arms and legs and stuff. Looked horrible. But I might have to give this one a go! And it's reasonably priced, too...

  9. Great question Ashley. No, this product does not come off when you sweat. Actually, I first applied it on a day that was 26 degrees celsius and even went swimming about 7 hours after applying. The tan stayed on perfectly. Lasting power - this is not the product to spray yourself with and have a nice tan for a week, it just won't happen. I have been giving myself a little spray every morning to maintain my tan and it's been perfect.

  10. Lancome makes a beautiful self-tanner. It makes a formula for the face and the body and as long as your exfoliate prior to application it makes a wonderful tan within the next day.

For a cheaper one I also like to use the Coppertone gradual self tanner. Its a stronger smell but very gentle for those of us who are very pale.
