Guest Post: Summer Makeup Tips and Tricks

Summer is a season of fun, and your makeup should reflect that. You don't have to spend hours prepping and primping yourself to look flawless just to hang out with friends or spend some time in the sun. We’ll list some of the easiest ways to make (and keep) your makeup looking flawless during the summer months without a lot of extra effort.

Runny Makeup?
If you're oily skinned and your makeup seems to run right off your face, start your daily routine with a really fantastic primer. Once your primer is on, your foundation should slide effortlessly onto your face. Set it with a good powder, and you'll be amazed at the staying power you get!

Oily Skin?
Got oily skin? There's a number of things you can do. First, eat the right foods and keep the junk off your plate – there is still some truth to the old adage ‘you are what you eat’. Carry blotting papers around with you to help dull down middle of the day shine. Make sure that you wash your face every single night before you lay down for bed, keep your hair pulled back out of your face, and wash your pillow cases every other night. Finally, look for the right makeup – you want makeup that’s made for oily skin, and there are increasingly more options available to you.

Dry Skin?
Dry skin can be a hassle when trying to get your makeup just right also- it can make you look flaky and dried out. If you have dry skin, make sure to wash your skin every night, drink plenty of extra water, and moisturize your skin every night before bed. Apply sunscreen before going outside, and keep your showers cool and short.

Want To Go Bold?
For a bold look this summer, you can either highlight your lips or eyes. To highlight your lips, go for an all-natural face paired with bright, shimmery lips. To highlight your eyes, keep your face and lipstick matte, and then choose dark or bold colors for your eyeshadow, with plenty of mascara.

Foundation Doesn't Match Anymore?
You should always go one shade up from your winter shade during the summertime. This is because spending extra time out in the sun leads to a darker complexion, while during the winter, most people tend to (naturally) be less tan because they spend less time out in direct sunlight. It’s unlikely that you’ll have the good fortune of using the same foundation in the Winter and Summer, but if you’re really opposed to buying new foundation or your complexion changes often, you could always use some bronzing liquid to darken your existing foundation.

Foundation Too Runny? Or Too Thick?
If your foundation is too runny, you can add ¼ of teaspoon of cornstarch or flour to thicken it up without drastically changing the coloring or look good properties it contains. If it's too thick, you can add ¼ of a teaspoon to a full teaspoon to your bottle to loosen things up a bit. Add just a smidgen at a time do you don't overdo it though.

Want Some Good General Tips?
Stay hydrated, and eat right. Remember that what goes into your body, must come out- and it comes out through your skin. Everyone should wash their face and moisturize every single night. Steer clear of slippery lip gloss during the summer months because it will be even more prone to slipping and sliding off of your lips. Always go minimal. The less foundation, powder, concealer, or whatever it is that you put on your face, the less of a chance you run in clogging your pores.

That's it ladies! Those are our summer makeup tips and tricks, we hope you enjoyed them! If you have anything you'd like to say about our tips, or if you would like to offer up some of your own, please feel free to do so in the comments below. We'd love to hear from you!

Wedge Fascination

Espadrille Obsession

I love love love wedges.  I don't know what it is, exactly, but there's something so fascinating about them.  They can dress up a slightly dull outfit, elongate your legs, are oh so comfortable, add a punch of color and, my favorite reason, they look great with every outfit.  Whether it's jeans, dresses, skirts, shorts, or leggings, adding a pair of these bad boys creates the perfect summer outfit.

Here I am with my newest wedge shoes bought on my weekend shopping spree for only $32.  Aren't they fun?

What about you?  Is anyone jumping on the wedge shoe train?

My Top 3 Beauty Products for Summer

We had our first real day of summer on Sunday!  YAY for us Vancouverites.

I spent the day walking the pier with a girlfriend, having beer and yummy eats on a patio with said friend and was having such a good time that I forgot to apply sunscreen to my back.  So I also got my first sunburn of the year....Ah, good times.

The sun (and my brightly colored maxi dress) got me thinking about my favorite colors and products for the summer.  Typically I would list off a TON of products that you HAVE to buy but, being as frugal as I am (ha), I've narrowed it down to your three 2011 summer must-haves: a good orange lipstick, a fabulous bronzer and a coral blush.  My personal picks for this year are Revlon's Colorburst Lipstick in Peach (075), Gosh Cosmetics' Giant Sun Powder (001) and Elizabeth Arden's Pure Finish Mineral Cheekcolor in Sunkissed Coral.

Revlon's Colorburst Lipstick in Peach has been my go-to shade for about a month now.  At first I thought I couldn't pull off an orange tone but I'm happy to say I was wrong.  I've been rocking this shade at the office, dinner dates with Allan and even around the house.  (it makes me feel glamorous.)  By the way, it only costs about about $9 CAN so I highly recommend it.

Gosh Cosmetics is slowly becoming one of my go-to product lines.  The line is price comparable to MAC (maybe even slightly less) and is almost as pigmented as MAC items.  And the best part is, it's available at all Shoppers Drug Mart locations.  Anyway, I was needing a new bronzer and decided to upgrade from last year's Rimmel purchase and this HUGE compact caught my eye.  As soon as I put it on my skin, I fell in love: it's smooth, has a fabulous golden tone and the perfect shimmery finish.  Well worth the $25 CAN.

Elizabeth Arden (the line) occasionally shocks me, like they did with this awesome blush color.  It's part of their Bronze in Bloom 2011 Collection and, best of all, it's mineral.  I love the soft color, the matte texture and the packaging, which is pretty much the best part.  Because it's a loose blush, there is a chance that the product could spill HOWEVER they created a snap close lid AND a turn-dial that, once turned to the right, enough product comes out for one use.  Genius if you ask me.

Oh look, it's me...ha. Here I am with the lipstick, bronzer and blush on.  See how shimmery everything is?

And an eery up-close shot.  However, you do get to see beautiful orange hue of the lipstick and the golden tone of the bronzer.  Sigh, I love these products.

NOTE:  For those ladies that live in Canada, check out the magazine FLARE (July 2011 Issue).  In the center of the magazine you'll find a coupon for the Bronze in Bloom Collection sold at the Bay.  With this coupon, if you purchase one of the BIB products, you'll get a free full-size Ceramide Lash Extending Treatment Mascara.  You should definitely take advantage of this!!!

Turquoise Summer

I am really loving Polyvore!!!  It's such a great way to find specific items that you wouldn't normally know about PLUS it's a fun creative outlet.

As I'm sure you can tell, I adore the color turquoise for summer.  Not only is it absolutely gorgeous against tanned skin, but you can pair it with anything coral and you're perfectly polished and ready for anything the day (or night) may throw at you.

What is your favorite color combination for the summer?
