DIY Beauty Fridays: Whitening Teeth with Strawberries

Well hello!

I am so very glad it's Friday as I'm sure you all are as well. My week has been rather odd. As you all know, I've had laryngitis/strep throat, which I still seem to have, and because of that, have not been to work in a week. Yaaahooo you say and, I must admit, at first I felt the same way but by day three on the couch I literally lost my mind; I've been so bored at home. I can not wait for Monday to role around so I can go back to the office with my voice (hopefully) in tact. However, all this time at home has given me some time to try out some amazing DIY recipes.

I never used to care too much about white teeth. Funny, I know but I always thought my teeth were white enough, I really did. It wasn't until products like Crest Whitestrips and ZOOM Whitening emerged that I really gave it much thought. However, because I have extremely sensitive teeth, I'm actually unable to use any of these whitening products and solutions. So, different measures must be taken...

Strawberry and Baking Soda Whitening Paste

1 ripe strawberry
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Crush the strawberry with a fork until it's pulpy. Add the baking soda and mix well until the soda is blended in. Apply directly to teeth using a soft toothbrush and leave on for about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes is up promptly rinse mouth with water AND brush teeth thoroughly with toothpaste. If any seeds remain, floss to remove. This trick can be used no more than once a week.

Why this works? - Strawberries, when mixed with baking soda, become a natural tooth cleaner, similar to the malic acid used in over the counter treatments. Both products are good for removing surface stains.

This trick is so easy, inexpensive, quick and really does the trick. I used to make this quite often and last night while cutting up my basket of fresh strawberries, I realized how long it's been since I last made it. I can see what me and the girlfriends are going to be doing tonight...

Happy weekend!

  13. This sounds like a pretty pleasant way for teeth whitening. I've heard that in the past baking soda and salt were used as ingredients in toothpastes. The flavour of strawberries will add a very pleasant taste to the bicarb.

  14. As we age, our teeth lose the brilliant whiteness that implies good dental health and youth. The unsightly stains associated with tobacco, dark liquids, and other factors can leave us feeling less-than-confident about our smiles. Fortunately, there is a simple solution to this dental problem: cosmetic tooth whitening.

  16. Are baking soda and baking powder almost the same thing? Or does it make a difference if you use baking soda?

  17. Wow. This is definitely innovative. Most people just use baking soda alone because it is primarily a cleaning agent, but I never thought that strawberry can actually augment to its effects. This is great! Thanks.
