DIY Beauty Fridays - Using Herbs For Hair Treatments

There is always something up with my hair.  I don't know if you feel the same way but my hair, honestly, is either too dry, or too oily, or too processed, or just too-something.  I am always on the hunt for new deep conditioners, shampoos, clarifiers and styling products that cause less buildup.  Sometimes, I am pleasantly surprised and find a product that works wonders BUT, let's be honest, most of the time the products don't do what I need them too.  I am always preaching about the importance of "keeping it simple" when it comes to skincare, so why not do the same with hair products right?

Rosemary and Horsetail.

I know you're reading those two words above and you probably think I've lost my mind but, I promise, I haven't.  Fresh herbs are fantastic as hair care products!  Rosemary, in case you might not have known, helps stimulate hair growth, fights dandruff and restores luster to your hair.  Horsetail, on the other hand, is a great source of silica.  (Silica strengthens the hair follicle at its core and restores shine.)  Plus, both herbs are extremely inexpesnive and you can find then at any grocery store.  Check these out:

Rosemary Hair Rinse

Pot of water (medium size)
Rosemary leaves

Bring a pot of water to boil and add the rosemary leaves.  Let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes.  Remove the leaves from the water and let the rosemary water cool.  (Refridgerate if need be).  Pour the mixture over freshly shampooed hair and rinse with lukewarm water.

Horsetail Shampoo

2 - 3 Tsp. of Horsetail
1/2 cup of water

Boil the water and then steep the horsetail in it.  Once steeped (it's similar to steeping tea so a couple minutes should do it) add the mixture to some baby shampoo and shampoo as normal.  Rinse with lukewarm water.

**If you have some issues finding horsetail, check out an organic grocery store or health food store.  Most shops like this do carry fresh herbs.

  2. Hooray! You know how much I adore DIY Beauty Fridays! Serious question: does it make a difference between using fresh or dehydrated herbs? ♥

  3. @mandy...for me, being the fresh spice/herb fan that I am, I notice a difference. However, because both recipes you are going to be steeping or adding the leaves to hot water, dry herbs should be fine. I would, though, try it out a couple times and see which way you prefer it. I find fresh rosemary makes a big difference....
